It was a huge, and productive, weekend of racing last week for Maccabi NSW Swimming Club, who fielded a squad of 19 swimmers in the 2023 Orange Aquatic Centre-hosted winter short course carnival.

If you include their supporting family members and friends, 50 members from the club made the trip. The carnival is a major annual swim meet in the state’s Central West, that’s officiated by staff from Swimming NSW.

Maccabi’s Sierra and Ryan Miller – aged eight and 10 – dominated the club’s medal tally, earning 18 between them, including 15 golds.

While the single most exciting moment for Maccabi at the meet was when its 16-year-old boys’ swimmer Cody Davis qualified for the ‘Medley Eliminator’ – a unique knockout format event following the 4×50 individual medley. He narrowly missed advancing in the backstroke round, settling for equal 5th place.

As head coach Anthony Goodridge said to the club’s members, “From a coaching perspective, this meet was about execution of the training so far, and from that, knowing how to adjust the work that comes next”.

The club’s president Elan Miller said the meet in Orange was a great team-building exercise for Maccabi, including a Shabbat dinner, team breakfasts and dinners, an optional outing to the cinema, and a post-meet ice cream treat.

“It was an amazing opportunity for all the kids and families to bond, and have fun,” he said.

“We had a special training session as a team, and then in the meet, our swimmers participated in events they have never swam in before, and earned multiple PB times in others.

“It was a real tribute to the community of swimmers with Maccabi.”

The squad also looked great, wearing t-shirts designed, and hand-dyed, especially for the Orange meet, by Mia and Anthony Goodridge.
