An impressive five of eight possible Maccabi Victoria Tennis Club teams competed in the recently-held Moorabbin and District Junior Tennis Association autumn/winter Saturday morning finals series.

Making the section 2 grand final, in just their first season of competitive tennis, was Maccabi’s green ball level team of Danielle Ehrenreich, Aiden Woolf, Bebe Kushlin, Ari Lipschitz and Remy Asseraf.

They finished runners-up, and although defeated six sets to nil by an in-form Mentone team in windy conditions, each set was close, with Mentone winning a total of 36 games to Maccabi’s 20.

Team manager Cara Kushlin said each player in this new team “gave it their all throughout, and in the finals … they’ve certainly done Maccabi proud”.

Also runners-up were Maccabi’s section 9 boys’ team comprising Anikin Margis, Nathan Yahalom, Elijah Naphtali, Levi Gorog and Peter Kats, defeated by Mentone four sets to two.

Set winners for Maccabi were Kats (6-4), and Margis/Naphtali (6-1), while Yahalom narrowly lost (5-7).

Runners-up too were Maccabi’s section 10 boys’ team of Alon Elboher, Alan Pogreb, Matthew Cashmore, Golahn Lerer and Yagel Shapiro, edged four sets to two by Dendy Park.

On games, Maccabi only lost 25-30, and their set wins went to Cashmore (6-3), and Pogreb/Cashmore (6-2), while Elboher/Shapiro lost in a tiebreaker.

Team manager Sharon Cashmore said, “Overall, the boys played brilliantly, had fun, cheered each other on and showed wonderful sportsmanship.”

In section 2, Maccabi’s boys’ team of Aaron Kramer, Ilan Elboher, Ian Altman, Yonatan Sirkis and Jaxson Brick placed third after winning the bronze medal round 5-1 versus Beaumaris. Altman was named that division’s player of the season.

And Maccabi’s section 4 boys’ team of Adam Weisz, Hugo Samuel, Jeremy Samuel and Maximus Leong came fourth. Samuel was section 4’s player of the season.
