Maccabi trio win Easts junior basketball titles
Last Sunday was an exciting end to the term 1 Easts Basketball League junior competition for Maccabi NSW Basketball Club, with six of its 19 teams in the league playing in grand finals, and three of them winning titles.
In a thrilling U10 C decider against a strong Inner City Sonics side, the Maccabi Clippers started well, and maintained a small lead for most of the game, until the Sonics scored a field goal to tie things up at 18-all at the end of regular time.
It was then a nail-biting finish for the Maccabi family members and friends watching on from the stand, as the Clippers’ disciplined defence in overtime, and a two-pointer, saw them come away with a gutsy 20-18 victory.
The U12A grand final was an all-Maccabi affair between the Lakers and the Celtics, who finished the regular season in equal first place.
In a promising sign for the future of Maccabi basketball, the match was of top quality.
The Lakers led at half-time, but the Celtics were able to raise their intensity at the start of the second half, and sink more shots at the basket and from around the key, distributing the ball well to create scoring opportunities.
The Celtics had their chances late in the match, and only a couple of missed shots separated the two teams at full-time, with the Celtics hanging on for a 32-29 victory.
Cooper Rosen and Jordan Sher were named most valuable players for the match.
A third premiership was won by Maccabi when their Bullets proved too good for White Magic in the U12 B2 grand final.
The Bullets began slowly, but were able to take control of the game by half-time, and then build an unbeatable lead. The final result was a convincing 33-14 win by the Bullets.
Also featuring in deciders were the Maccabi U8 Nuggets, who took on ladder leaders City Hoops, and the Maccabi U10A Bulls, who battled the Hoopsters.
The Nuggets fought hard against a taller side, falling 8-27, while the Bulls lost 18-23.
