Maccabi Vic volunteer awards are well deserved
It was an opportunity to say thank you at the Maccabi Victoria Volunteer Awards held on May 22 at Caulfield Park Bowls Club, when 18 volunteering awards, and three major perpetual awards, were presented, coinciding with National Volunteers Week.
Maccabi Victoria president Brian Swersky said, “Volunteers are the backbone of Maccabi clubs and programs … our organisation simply would not exist without them.
“In Victoria, each week almost 4000 people compete as Jews, under the Maccabi banner ‘Maccabi Proud’, supported by the tireless efforts of thousands of volunteers in every capacity.
“I would like to recognise and acknowledge the amazing work of all Maccabi [club] presidents, and their committees, who spend countless hours, unconditionally, to oversee the smooth running and growth of our clubs.”
The recipients of the President’s Award were Mark Roseman and Clive Aaron, who were highly involved in initiating and spearheading the establishment of Maccabi Aquatics last year.
Both are longstanding, active and engaged committee members of the re-established Maccabi-AJAX Swimming Club, and have also been heavily involved in the Maccabi National Swim Committee, and in organising the annual MS Maccabi Swimathon.
Rhonda Nussbaum – the driving force behind Maccabi Victoria Basketball Club as vice-president from 2017 to early this year – earned the Len Bogatin Award for outstanding service to Maccabi Victoria and Jewish sport.
Nussbaum, who could not attend the presentation, spent countless hours ensuring that more than 600 members were able to get onto the courts every week for two seasons each year, and she continues to support the committee to ensure the club’s ongoing success.
The inaugural Jacquie Lerner Next Gen Award, which recognises a young volunteer or leader at Maccabi Victoria, was bestowed upon Marcus Frajman.
The former Maccabi Victoria Tennis Club junior, who now plays for Maccabi in the adult pennant competition, will represent Australia at this year’s Maccabiah Games.
Frajman has served on the club’s committee as a volunteer in many different capacities, from communications, to liaison officer, and he is now club treasurer.
His willingness to help in any capacity, in a patient and friendly manner, continues to serve the club well.
The various Maccabi and AJAX Victoria clubs also presented a volunteer award each to: Barbara Bejer (all abilities), Adam Bogatin (athletics), Rhonda Nussbaum (basketball), Antony Friedman (junior cricket), Mark Soffer (senior cricket), Jeff Alford (junior footy), Joe Nankin (senior footy), Tony Beaconsfield (golf), Simon Krampel (hockey), Gary Lasky (lawn bowls), Romi Zaslavsky (netball), John Gould (squash), Kevin Milstein (football), Mark Roseman and Clive Aaron (swimming), Paul Bronstein (table tennis), Derek Haskin (tennis), Ross Heideman (water polo).
