The 2022 Big V basketball season got under way last weekend, featuring Maccabi Warriors teams in Division 2 of both the youth and men’s leagues.

Four players scored points for Maccabi in their Big V debuts in the youth league – Nadav Shtir, Guy Chalfon, Jarreed Waislitz and James Chernovsky.

While the Warriors were defeated 57-83 by Whittlesea in round one, there were some green shoots, including Nicolas Taranto top-scoring with 13 points, and making 11 rebounds.

In the men’s round one match, Maccabi lost 64-99 to a strong Gippsland team.

The Warriors’ top scorer was Bailey DeBortoli (18 points), in a squad that includes new recruits Brett Jackson, Harry Purcell, and Michael Zukerman.

The club’s Big V co-ordinator Susannah Swiatlo said Maccabi is “hoping to surprise a few teams as the Big V season goes on”.

“It’s an exciting time, with some of our players selected to represent Australia in both the 5×5 and 3×3 basketball competitions at the Maccabiah Games this July,” she said.

“And we’ve really invested in building a successful [Big V] program, on and off the court.”
