AFTER the disappointment of relegation last season, North Caulfield Maccabi’s seniors women’s edged closer to a return to State League 2 after a 2-0 victory at home over the Boroondara Eagles on Sunday.
With several key players missing through injury, Maccabi’s gritty performance established the side in outright second place and it now sits only three points behind first-placed Seaford United.
Rock-solid in defence all season, the side has conceded the third-least amount of goals in the league, and kept another clean sheet against the Eagles.
Goalkeeper Lexi Kowal was in fine form, while the centreback pairing of Samantha Blau and Jessica Nash was relentless in denying Boroondara’s forwards time on the ball.
Maccabi took an early advantage as Rebecca Rubenstein delivered a perfectly weighted through-ball, which was controlled and blasted into the bottom corner by in-form striker Keren Schneeweiss.
The Eagles battled for an equaliser but were held up by the home side’s stubborn defence.
Midfielders Ricki Sher, Nat Court and Tara Donnan held sway in the middle and helped Maccabi enjoy the bulk of possession, as coach Tim Purcell urged his side to capitalise on its dominance with another goal.
The sealer came 10 minutes from the final whistle, when a powerful strike from Schneeweiss was saved by the Eagles keeper, but rebounded into the path of Rubenstein, who made no mistake and finished truly from close range.
