IN brilliant results earlier this month, Maccabi NSW members representing Double Bay Bowling Club achieved women’s senior pairs, and women’s senior fours, Region 13 title wins.

In the fours regional final against a very strong Taren Point team, Double Bay plugged away to an excellent 14-0 lead after six ends.

Iris Kampel, Leikie Becker – subbing for an injured Marna Morris – Pam Stein and Barbara Shotland settled into the match quickly on the fast-paced Double Bay green, but to their credit, Taren Point clawed their way back to equalise at 19-all after the 18th end, forcing an extra end.

Fortunes changed with every bowl, and the final outcome came down to Shotland requiring the last bowl to propel the jack into the ditch.

She stayed calm and focused, and did just that!

The win earned them a place in the NSW Championships, to be played in Tamworth in April.

Then in the pairs regional final against Sutherland, Double Bay duo Iris Kampel and Rene Saidman established a 5-point lead by the halfway mark, on the back of keeping up constant pressure on their opponents with close bowls and good positional receivers.

Their lead increased to an impassable 21-8 by the 19th end, at which point Sutherland conceded the match, earning Double Bay a place at the NSW Championships.

In mixed pairs bowls on January 16, a Double Bay team comprising Rein Rowlands and Walter Jacobs competed in the zone final, and established an early lead against Taren Point in front of a good turnout of Double Bay fans.

But they could not maintain their lead, and Taren Point emerged as winners.
