MACCABI Hakoah’s two senior women’s teams have come up short in their respective grand finals, with both the All Age 3 (AA3) and All Age 4 (AA4) teams going down in agonisingly close matches.
The AA3’s, who scraped through to the ultimate decider against Lokomotiv Cove, battled out a tough encounter that ended 5-4, with the final goal coming in the dying stages of the match.
Both sides piled on the goals in an open game, with Maccabi taking it to the minor premiers who had lost just two games for the year.
Lokomotiv hit the lead on three occasions, only for Maccabi to strike back every time.
On the back of brilliant attacks from midfielders Sophie Weisz, Danielle Abel and Rebecca Kriesler, the forward pair of Jennifer Shkolnik and Rebecca Joseph found the back of the net several times.
Lauren Broit, Miriam Charak and Claudia Lowy all put in superb performances to keep Maccabi within touch of its opposition.
But with the match destined for extra time, Lokomotiv somehow found a winner to take a 5-4 lead with only minutes to go.
Despite conceding in what was a crucial blow to Maccabi’s title hopes, the side had one more attempt before the final whistle, but a free kick from distance smashed into the post to deny it the premiership.
Meanwhile, the AA4 team also went down in devastating circumstances, losing to Queen’s Park (P) 3-1 in a penalty shootout after the match ended 1-1 after 90 minutes.
The two teams finished on equal points after the regular season, but Maccabi took out the minor premiership thanks to a superior goal difference.
However, Queen’s Park hit back in the ultimate decider, keeping its cool from the spot as Maccabi faltered in the shootout, after neither side was able to edge ahead after regular and extra time.
