THE Jewish community will mark two inextricably linked commemorations – one celebratory and one sombre – next week.

Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s 70th Independence Day, will be celebrated with a community event at Moriah College featuring stalls, rides and music on Thursday, April 19.

Two days prior in the evening of Tuesday, April 17, the community will have an opportunity to remember those who have given their lives defending the State of Israel and those who have perished in terrorist attacks at a Yom Hazikaron ceremony, also at Moriah.

“The achievements of the State of Israel in such a relatively short space of time are unparalleled,” Zionist Council of NSW president Richard Balkin said.

“Its contributions to mankind in so many different spheres, its revitalising of an ancient language into a modern-day spoken tongue, its absorption of millions of Jews from around the globe and its economic success are all examples of the phenomenal success that is the State of Israel.”

Balkin urged the community to come together in celebration of the Jewish homeland. “We need to show our support by celebrating this milestone as never before,” he said.

“I urge people to bring their children and grandchildren to our community event where they can sing and dance with our wonderful band from Israel, enjoy our fun fair with free rides, and visit our communal shuk.”

Similarly, he encouraged as many people as possible to pay tribute at Yom Hazikaron, noting that over 1000 people attended the commemoration last year.

“Yom Hazikaron, the day we remember those who have given their lives in defence of the State of Israel, is of utmost importance,” he said.

“I urge the community to come to the remembrance ceremony and pay their respects and show their support to the more than 23,000 families of the fallen and victims of terror.”

A young adults event will be held at the Beresford Hotel on Wednesday, April 18.
