Maya Weiss reflects on Idol

Weiss was selected to be in the top 25 on The Voice Australia in 2013, so she's no stranger to the reality television journey. But, she explained, there are differences between the two shows.

Maya Weiss shared that it’s not always easy being a musician. While she loves the gig more than anything else, it’s hard to be heard online at the moment, especially with audiences being flooded with new content all day, every day. Which is why she auditioned for Australian Idol. While she finished her Idol journey earlier than she’d hoped, being voted out of the top 12, she described it as a super exciting experience.

She even earned one of judge Kyle Sandilands’ ‘Touchdowns’ during top 24 week.

The 28-year-old full-time singer lives in Melbourne and credits her grandmother, a Holocaust survivor who went on to become a very successful scientist, for always keeping her connected with the Jewish community.

Weiss was selected to be in the top 25 on The Voice Australia in 2013, so she’s no stranger to the reality television journey. But, she explained, there are differences between the two shows.

“On Idol we didn’t have as much ‘producing’ of our looks [or] staging in the early rounds,” she told The AJN. “We had a huge week of several group challenges that were really fun but huge, long days. There was also a lot less time with the judges compared to The Voice where we spent a lot more time workshopping with them. But overall, it wasn’t very different, I definitely enjoyed Idol more though. It was really fun being challenged by the shows group rounds.”

Ultimately, it was her rendition of Cold Heart by Elton John and Dua Lipa that ended her Idol journey. It was Sandilands, who Weiss described as “way nicer in person than people think”, who was most critical of her performance.

“Kyle didn’t like that I sung Cold Heart by Elton John and Dua Lipa,” she said. “He thought it was a little bit flat in energy, but I also felt it was hard to take as it wasn’t my first choice to sing that song. But that’s just the way these shows work and it’s a great reflection on how easily you can go wrong with just a song choice on these TV shows.”

Still though, she said she had a wonderful experience.

“I thought doing something like this would just open new people up to my career and challenge me in different ways,” she said. “I hope I can reach more people and continue a full-time singing career.”
