Waverley Mayor’s call for collaboration
'The terror attack on Adass Israel Synagogue is a horrific display of antisemitism'
Waverly mayor Will Nemesh moved a mayoral minute on Tuesday night calling on state and local governments to work together to fight antisemitism, in the wake of last Friday’s arson attack in Melbourne.
“The terror attack on Adass Israel Synagogue is a horrific display of antisemitism,” Nemesh told The AJN.
“The prevalence, frequency and the brazen display of antisemitism we are now witnessing in our local community is alarming and demands strong leadership to address it.”
The motion welcomes Premier Chris Minns’ statement that the state government will review laws to protect places of worship.
“There has been an absence of leadership by the federal Labor government on this issue. In contrast, the Premier has shown strong leadership and a willingness to take action against antisemitism,” Nemesh said.
“This mayoral minute calls for both state government and local government within the eastern suburbs to work collaboratively to address antisemitism.”
The minute calls for a meeting with Minns, the mayors and general managers of Waverley, Woollahra and Randwick Councils, together with Vaucluse MP Kellie Sloane and Coogee MP Marjorie O’Neill.
“Enough is enough. Our local Jewish community feels vulnerable. This is unacceptable,” Nemesh said. “I am committed to ensuring our local Jewish community feels safe and valued.”
