AS round one of this year’s AFL season kicks off, the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) has officially opened its new prayer room.

Rabbi Dovid Gutnick of East Melbourne Shule, Rabbi Gabi Kaltmann of the ARK Centre and Daniel Aghion joined other interfaith leaders on Tuesday at the official opening of this important addition to the iconic stadium.

Rabbi Kaltmann was the Jewish liaison for the prayer room build and advised on the particulars of the new space, together with media personality Waleed Aly and former Richmond player Bachar Houli, both of whom follow Islam.

Rabbi Kaltmann told The AJN, “The MCG is an inclusive place for all and the multi-faith prayer space has been designed to cancel out noise so people can pray without disturbance.

“Sport and faith are intertwined – this isn’t just for footy but all events that take place at the ‘G’.

“The new prayer room shows that the MCG is the beating heart of Melbourne.

“Providing a multi-faith prayer room reflects the needs of multicultural Australians, especially in such a central location where so many love to gather.”
