Harry’s five-goal haul for Vic Metro
Harry Sheezel – a Sandringham Dragons NAB League Boys’ player who is a genuine top-10 pick prospect for this year’s AFL draft – put on the boots for Vic Metro U18s in a match against the Young Guns on May 7 in Werribee, and played superbly in a losing side.
The 17-year-old Mount Scopus student, and former AJAX player, scored five goals, set up others, and also had a strong game in defence.
A skilful, versatile “hybrid” forward, Sheezel kicked 13 goals and averaged 20 disposals in the first four rounds of the NAB League, which resumes on May 22 when Sandringham will host the Eastern Ranges.
But before then, Sheezel will have another opportunity to impress in rep footy when he plays for the NAB AFL Academy against Collingwood’s VFL side.

Outgoing Hemed receives WSW Golden Boot award
Israeli striker Tomer Hemed was awarded the Golden Boot award by the Western Sydney Wanderers last week for top-scoring with six goals from his 20 games for the Black & Reds.
But the Wanderers finished a disappointing 10th place this season, missing the finals series for the fifth straight year, and they also bowed out of the Australia Cup with a 1-3 loss to Brisbane on May 13.
Hemed was on a one-year contract with the Wanderers, and will now consider his playing options for next season.
CITY OF SYDNEY BASKETBALL
A perfect Maccabi men’s derby
Maccabi derbies are always exciting, but the round 2 City of Sydney men’s basketball division 1 clash on Monday night between the Rockets and Kings was next level.
The Rockets were coming off a big first round victory, and the Kings a narrow loss. With both teams unwilling to give an inch, their match ended in a thrilling 46-all draw.
The Rockets led by five points with just a minute left before the final buzzer, when Larry Wagenheim nailed a three-pointer for the Kings.
Then, with only three seconds remaining, the Kings managed to foul Rockets guard Ricky Schlesinger, and convert one of two scoring attempts from the free-throw line.
Still trailing by two points, Kings’ big man Moshe Engelman found guard Josh Burg who made it just into Rockets’ territory, took a deep breath, and nailed a long distance two-point shot attempt to tie the game.
Topscorer for the Kings was Brad Nissen with 20 points, and for the Rockets, Jordan Spyrides with 13, and Beck Rosen 11.
EAST SYDNEY MEN’S FOOTBALL
Maccabi masters maul Eagles
Highlights for Maccabi-Hakoah FC in round six of the Easts men’s season were a huge 7-0 win for their Maccabiah-bound over-45s team versus the South East Eagles in division 1, and their division 3 men’s team’s impressive 6-0 thrashing of third-placed Waverley Old Boys.
Hard work at training is paying off for the Blues’ over-45s in their matches, as they ran rings around the Eagles, even without injured striker Terry Sperber.
David Hirst scored a hat-trick, Zac Marks a brace, and Igor Likhorovitch and Rodney Rosmarin scored a goal each.
The win elevated them to first place. They will need all their players fit and firing in July in Israel, as the USA, Brazil and Argentina are in their side of the draw.
Goalscorers in Maccabi’s big division 3 win were James Ellerine (2), Daniel Nussbaum, Dean Savitt and Aaron Kantor. They are now back in the top four.
In Sunday division 1, Maccabi lost 1-2 to ladder leaders Barnstoneworth, and in division 2, Mark Filler and Gilly Hirsch scored a goal each in Maccabi’s 2-3 loss to leaders Easts.
MELBOURNE TENNIS
Solid start to pennant season for Maccabi
Three out of five of Maccabi Victoria Tennis Club’s teams began the new pennant season by winning in round one.
Maccabi’s grade 4 team won all their matches in their season opener, and despite a few late changes to the Rosenberger team, the club performed well enough in grade 5 to win, and also won in grade 8.
In grade 7 in a summer grand final rematch, Maccabi lost a close one, but did manage to win both doubles matches.
While they lost in grade 9, Stephen Kleid left no stone unturned in terms of effort, playing in four tie-breakers.
