Minns meets AUJS

NSW Premier Chris Minns met with executive Australasian Union of Jewish Students (AUJS) leaders last week to discuss the prevalence of antisemitism on university campuses and the responses of various university administrations.

“We discussed challenges faced by Jewish students on campuses in NSW, including rising antisemitism, and discussed proactive steps to confront it,” Minns told The AJN.

During the meeting, the AUJS leaders explained how the prevalence of antisemitism on university campuses is infringing on Jewish students’ ability to enjoy their studies.

They provided examples of Jewish students experiences on campuses and antisemitic incidents and explained how the fear of harassment and intimidation has driven Jewish students to hide their identity.

AUJS further explained how Jewish students’ trust in university administration is eroding due to inaction from some chancelleries, or mismanagement of university reporting mechanisms. AUJS also gave examples of gaps in communication between university administrations, the NSW Police and Jewish students who have reported incidents. The need to review legislation that has contributed to the persistence of encampments on campuses was also emphasised.

“We are grateful to Premier Minns for the productive meeting and for listening to the lived experiences of Jewish students,” said AUJS president Noah Loven.

“It is through strong leadership and meaningful policy changes that we can address the challenges faced by Jewish students. We look forward to working collaboratively with the Premier and his government to ensure universities become safer spaces for all students.”

AUJS co-president elect Danielle Tischmann said, “Jewish students are withdrawing from campus life as antisemitism grows, with many feeling compelled to hide their identity out of fear of harassment and ­intimidation.”v
