The City of Stonnington in Melbourne’s southeast has unanimously passed a motion to light the Malvern Town Hall in the Israeli colours of blue and white.

The two Greens councillors voted in favour, despite the Victorian Greens in the State Parliament voting against a motion to condemn Hamas for the massacre of civilians in Israel.

Councillor Marcia Griffin moved the motion, saying, “We have seen that Hamas, like other terrorist groups, has no limits to its brutality and we have heard the calls for the killing of Jews even here in the streets of Stonnington. Imagine the pain this brings to our local Jewish community, many of whom suffered the evil cruelty of the Nazi Holocaust and this week have seen that all again.”

Councillor Polly Morgan, representing the Greens, told the meeting that while some people try to claim that the current occupation of Palestine justifies the actions of Hamas, there is clearly no justification for acts of terrorism.

“Hamas does not represent the Palestinian people. The terrorist attacks by Hamas against innocent Israeli civilians are criminal and abhorrent,” she said.

Meanwhile the neighbouring Glen Eira City Council unanimously voted for a condolence motion and held a minute’s silence at its meeting on Tuesday night.

The motion, put forward by Cr Margaret Esakoff and seconded by Cr Simone Zmood, condemned the atrocities perpetrated by Hamas and expressed condolences to the people of Israel, the family and friends of those slaughtered and the innocent people of Gaza who are under terrorist rule.

Greens Councillors Sue Pennicuik and David Zyngier both supported an amendment expressing concern about the number of deaths, injuries and displacement of civilians in Gaza.

The amendment was defeated and both Greens councillors voted for the condolence motion.
