Monash researchers can support Royal Commission

As the Royal Commission into antisemitism and social cohesion prepares to begin its work, Monash University researchers say their groundbreaking study of hatred across Australian society can provide crucial evidence to support the inquiry.

The Monash Initiative for Rapid Research into Antisemitism (MIRRA) has spent the past year investigating how antisemitism manifests differently across sectors, from universities and the arts to healthcare and sport.

Associate Professor David Slucki, director of Monash’s Australian Centre for Jewish Civilisation and MIRRA project lead, said the Royal Commission could benefit from the team’s unique grassroots approach.

“Rather than looking at the problem from 30,000 feet, we’re actually trying to tackle it at a grassroots level,” Slucki said.

“We’re going sector by sector to understand the different ways antisemitism manifests depending on what part of Australian society we’re talking about.”
