MORIAH College hosted an Evening in Awe and the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies’ (JBD’s) commemoration of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, honouring the accession of King Charles III last month.

“We join with the rest of the country and the Commonwealth more broadly to remember the extraordinary life and historic ten- ure of Queen Elizabeth II and to mourn her passing,” JBD president David Ossip said in his address.

“Her Majesty was a rock of stability in an often volatile world, a model of dignity and grace in the most trying of circumstances and a source of unity, harmony and humanity. Her service to our community was not merely through her warmth and outreach to Jewish communities throughout the Commonwealth, but through her extensive commitment to promoting societal unity and cohesion – creating a society in which each group could be itself in the truest sense and yet come together in service of the common good.

“We offer our congratulations to His Majesty, King Charles III on his accession to the throne and offer our support to him, recognising the friendship he has shown to Jewish communities throughout the Commonwealth to date.”

An initiative spearheaded by College Rabbi Gad Krebs, the event was a night of music and inspiration featuring several community Rabbis, Chazans and choirs, in preparation for the Yamim Noraim (Days of Awe).

“By bringing the community together, we will be inspired by both the musical talent that we boast intertwined with the wisdom of our tradition. Together we can learn and be inspired,” said Rabbi Krebs.

Moriah College principal Rabbi Yehoshua Smukler said, “It is wonderful to come together as a community for an uplifting evening of song and inspiration, as we ready ourselves to coronate our ‘King of Kings’ on Rosh Hashanah.

“It is amazing to be living through this historical event as we imminently turn the page in Jewish history and usher in the New Year of 5783.”

All proceeds from the event were donated to JDC (The Joint) Australia and its efforts to aid Ukrainian Jews in crisis.
