Coronavirus at Moriah: Student recovering well
Students at Sydney's Moriah College returned to school on Monday after a year 5 pupil tested positive to coronavirus last week.
MORIAH College students returned to school on Monday, almost a week after a year 5 student was diagnosed with coronavirus and the school’s primary and high school cohorts were sent home as a precaution.
Last week, NSW Health confirmed that a total of 28 students and three teachers were identified as having had close contact with the 10-year-old boy.
While it remains unclear how the boy contracted the virus, he is recovering at home and said to be “doing well”. The AJN understands he attended class on Thursday, May 21 and was driven to school in a private vehicle.
Moriah principal Rabbi Yehoshua Smukler told The AJN, “We could have brought everyone back onto the campus prior to the weekend, however we decided to take the opportunity to return on Monday, as the college was closed from Thursday afternoon anyway, for Shavuot.”
He said the college had “erred on the side of caution in doing a deeper clean and disinfection of the campus” and thanked the Moriah community for “working with us in such a seamless manner”.
Students identified as close contacts, and a few of their siblings who are not able to maintain appropriate social distance in their household, “will not attend the college until 14 days [of isolation] after their contact”, Moriah said.
“I ask parents to reassure their children that the school is safe and secure, and to reinforce that the movement off site last Tuesday was about taking extra care of our students and their families so that they remain protected whenever NSW Health notifies the school of a positive case of COVID-19 in our college environment,” head of primary school Lynda Fisher added.
Moriah was the second eastern suburbs school to record a coronavirus case last week, with a student at nearby Waverley College also contracting the virus.
