An array of Jewish community members and organisation representatives have been appointed as members of the Glen Eira Council’s inaugural multicultural advisory committee (MAC).

Formed in 2022, MAC aims to offer advice to the council about the activities of our culturally diverse community, to help the council improve the way it communicates to, and engages with, residents and businesses, so it can celebrate and recognise every voice and make the best decisions for those who live and work in Glen Eira.

The committee is made up of 12 individuals who represent Glen Eira’s diverse cultural, ethnic, linguistic and faith communities, including eight representatives from organisations that support people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Rabbi Yaakov Glasman, of St Kilda Shule, was appointed as an individual member, and is anticipating making a meaningful contribution to the council over the coming two years.

I feel extremely humbled to have been appointed to the Glen Eira Council’s inaugural multicultural advisory committee,” he told The AJN.

This role will afford me the opportunity to learn from an incredible team of people representing our diverse Glen Eira community, and to hopefully share my experiences from the many interfaith roles I have had since joining the rabbinate in 2005,” Rabbi Glasman said, adding “The role of this newly formed committee is to ensure that people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds are able to provide advice to the council on ways to celebrate multiculturalism and implement social cohesion strategies.

Additional Jewish community representation includes Joshua Goodman, representing the Jewish Community Council of Victoria (JCCV); Cassandra Barrett, representing Jewish Care Victoria; and Maureen Barten, representing Progressive Judaism Victoria.
