National championships success

Several Jewish players featured in youth and men’s state teams that competed at the 2024 Futsal Australian Championships in the Gold Coast earlier this month.

NSW Thunder won the open men’s grand final 6-1 over ladder leader Football Victoria Moreland, who were unable to maintain their winning form when it counted most.

The championship-winning NSW Thunder side included Jewish players from the Mascot Vipers club, Futsalroo rep Ethan De Melo, and Jonathan Barzel, who both represented Australia at the 2022 Maccabiah Games in Israel.

Braces to Grant Lynch and Shervin Keshavarz Adeli sealed the grand final win.

In the semis, NSW Thunder had beaten Western Australia 2-0.

The NSW Lightning side, featuring Hakoah goalkeeper Noah Feilich, fell in the quarter-finals to Capital Football 5-11.

In an all-NSW youth men’s decider, NSW Thunder thrashed NSW Lightning 6-1 to claim a national title. NSW Lightning’s squad included Jewish player Coby New from Hakoah.

NSW Lightning qualified for the decider by edging Queensland 6-4 in the semis.
