AUSTRALIA’S netballers have had a huge boost in their quest for gold, comprehensively beating fierce rivals Great Britain 42-21. The Brits were a better opponent than the Aussies’ victims on Tuesday night, Israel, but were still no match for the girls in green and gold.
The two teams will play again the round robin stage but the aussie girls have gained an early psychological advantage in the likelihood that the two teams meet in the gold medal game.
“It’s a huge win for us. We know we can beat them now and it will give us alot of confidence when we play off for the gold,” said coach Irene Wright.
Lisa Paneth was once again brilliant at goalkeepr, repelling a string of British attacks, while Nat Miller’s energy from goal defence lifted her side in the early stages.
Australia took a 10-4 quarter time lead thanks to the deadly shooting of Elise Kausman and Nat Mizrachi who were presented with a string of opportunities from the rampant mid court of Kylie Grynberg, Lainie Bejer and Nat Ritterman.
With a vocal futsal team willing them on, Australia had the British silenced both on and off the court.
The dominance continued after half-time with Mizrachi the stand out in front of goal to extend the lead and send a message to the Brits that the Aussies deserve the tag of gold medal favourites.
The Junior girls also thumped the Brits 50-15 confirming their status as gold medal favourites.
Zoe Fayman shone at goal defence, while Kim Mordech and Bec Urlich were also solid contributors in a dominant team performance.
