JEWISH Care has announced a changing of the guard, with a new chief executive set to take the reins of the organisation next January, when current CEO Bill Appleby steps down from the role after 12 years.

He will be succeeded by Alan Lilly, who has almost two decades of experience as an executive and chief executive in both the public health service and private aged care organisations.

Lilly served for seven years at the helm of Eastern Health and subsequently at BlueCross I Sapphire Care, the largest residential aged care provider in Victoria.

“I am thrilled and honoured to be joining Jewish Care as CEO and to be leading the organisation through the ever-present challenges and opportunities,” he said. “Building on Bill Appleby’s legacy, my commitment will be to further enhance Jewish Care’s fine reputation for the high-quality care and services it provides to the community.

“My own values are very much aligned with those of Jewish Care and I look forward to getting to know all those who make up this vibrant organisation be they elders, clients, staff and volunteers – and to serving the Jewish community.

Reflecting on the distinct cultural and religious requirements of Jewish Care’s clientele, Lilly told The AJN, “I have worked with many people from diverse communities during the course of my career. Having also worked at Caulfield Hospital (part of Alfred Health) for more than five years, I certainly do have insights into the Jewish culture and way of life. But of course, there’s always more to learn and I look forward to embracing the culture and understanding more about it.”

As to the most important contribution he hopes to bring to the organisation, Lilly said, “A commitment to improvement and an open mind to the realms of possibility. Being reflective, open to new ideas and always listening.”

Lilly worked extensively on matters related to the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety and was a member of the National Aged Care Workforce Strategy Taskforce. Recently appointed to the Victorian Public Sector Residential Aged Care Expert Advisory Group, he is a member of the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards Improvement Academy and an adjunct professor with Australian Catholic University.

Welcoming him to the role, Jewish Care president Susie Ivany said, “We are confident that Alan’s wealth of experience and engaging leadership style will reap great rewards for all at Jewish Care and the wonderful community we serve.”

Thanking Appleby “for his 12 years of invaluable service”, she added, “Bill’s exceptional leadership, unwavering commitment and ethical stewardship have garnered immeasurable benefits for our organisation and community.”
