A NEW community centre will open in Randwick in time for Rosh Hashanah, with a view to welcoming currently unaffiliated Jewish community members.
The Soul Centre, headed by Rabbi Aycee and Rebbetzin Sorella Abrahams, will act as a hub for anyone looking to experience Judaism, beginning with Rosh Hashanah celebrations in the park.
“We’re doing a shofar blowing in the park, with some honey cake and a nice Rosh Hashanah vibe, [for] people who are not up to going to shule or joining in community celebrations in other ways,” Rebbetzin Abrahams told The AJN.
“We’re just looking to tap into a new demographic of young families, young professionals and hoping to engage them in some kind of Judaism depending on where they’re at and what they’d like.”
Rebbetzin Abrahams, who runs community not-for-profit Abraham’s Tent with her husband, said she hopes the Soul Centre will help people find some way to celebrate Rosh Hashanah.
“People should be encouraged to engage wherever they’re at, and just feel a sense of community especially on our New Year,” she said.
“Just meeting at the park and hearing a shofar blowing, that’s a small way that people can be involved and celebrate the Jewish New Year.”
The Soul Centre will run programs throughout the High Holy Days, as well as Shabbat meals, monthly Friday night dinners for young professionals, and other programming for families including Mummy and Me.
“There’s a whole plan of programs, but we are starting with the New Year.
“We think that’s a nice time to start and to give people a little bit of a taster.”
“If anyone is living in or around Randwick, or even people who are not living in or around Randwick but are not yet part of the community or a synagogue, they should feel free to come along.
“We welcome everyone and we’re very excited.”
