The school announced in March that Watt will retire at the end of the 2024 academic year, following a 40-year career in the education sector.
Emms is currently the head of learning and teaching (K-12) at MLC School in Sydney. She has previously held the positions of head of curriculum at Abbotsleigh, dean of creative arts at The Scots College and various year level coordinator positions at Ravenswood School for Girls.
In a letter to parents last Friday, president Gary Joffe said Emms “is a highly respected, experienced educator and leader”.
“Linda embraces the core values of our school, and we are confident she will build on the legacy of Andrew Watt and the leaders before him in leading the delivery of an exceptional secular and Jewish education and inspiring, extending and developing our staff and students alike,” he said.
“Linda is eager to meet all members of Emanuel School, learn more about Judaism and the history and unique challenges of our community, and immerse herself in the pluralistic and egalitarian culture of our school.”
Endorsing his successor’s appointment, Watt said, “I’m delighted that Emanuel has found someone of Linda’s calibre to lead our wonderful school through its next chapter of growth and I look forward to working closely with Linda as she transitions into her new role with Emanuel.”
Emms said she was “honoured to have the opportunity to lead such an impressive school with such a caring and supportive community”.
“I am passionate about education and its role in shaping the lives of our students. It is with great joy that I look forward to becoming a part of the Emanuel community and working with Andrew and Emanuel leadership through the transition,” she said.
