New Shoah museum for Perth
The federal government has committed a $6 million grant to the redevelopment of Perth's Jewish Community Centre, which will include a new Holocaust museum.
PERTH’S Jewish Community Centre (JCC) is set for a “once-in-a-generation” multimillion dollar upgrade that will see the construction of a Perth Holocaust Museum and William Cooper Memorial.
The federal government announced this week it will support the redevelopment with a $6 million grant to create an “iconic Western Australian community facility in the heart of the Perth Jewish precinct”.
The AJN understands the grant accounts for almost half the funding required for the project.
The centre currently comprises office space for a number of Jewish community groups, an open space for social and cultural activities, seminars and presentations, meeting facilities and the Holocaust Institute.
The upgrade is the most significant capital works project since the JCC was established in 1974, and will include a community day care centre.
“During the election the Morrison government announced $300,000 for repairs and renovations to the centre; however, it was clear that the centre needed a once-in-a-generation redevelopment,” Stirling MP Vince Connelly and Finance Minister Mathias Cormann said in a statement.
“Since then we have been engaging with the community to develop a proposal, and this vision will now become a reality.”
They said the construction of a new Perth Holocaust Museum will “ensure that the Western Australian community can … promote education, integration and understanding for many years to come”.
“The government shares this vision with the Jewish Community Centre and we are pleased to contribute to making this vision a reality.”
In a statement, a JCC spokesperson said, “Over the past three years, we have been working on plans to either refurbish or redevelop the Jewish Community Centre to enable it to remain the vibrant heart of our community’s activities.”
