One-woman show
"We laughed and we cried."
Israeli actress Netta Yashchin took the stage by storm recently when she performed her one-woman show Sabra at the Glen Eira Theatrette.
The play recounts the experiences of a Russian immigrant in Israel.
There were two performances – one in English and one in Hebrew – with audiences for both equally enthralled.
The production was hosted by Habayit, Zionism Victoria and the Zionist Federation of Australia.
Habayit’s Hallely Kimchi said, “We laughed and we cried. But whatever the emotion, the overriding sense was one of joy at the opportunity to experience Israeli theatre on the stage in Melbourne.”
Zionism Victoria executive director Zeddy Lawrence added, “We believe this may have been the very first time a professional play was performed in Hebrew in Australia, which makes it all the more special.
“Hopefully, it will set a precedent and we’ll see many more Israeli productions in the months and years ahead.”
