Golden Years

Open for business

With NSW hitting the vaccination targets to reopen, things are changing on a weekly basis. What are the rules around visiting loved ones in cemeteries?

There has been some misinformation regarding the status of Rookwood Cemetery. Here are some answers to frequently asked questions.

Is Rookwood Cemetery open?

At the time of publishing (8.10.21):
● Visitors are allowed short visits to a grave to pay their respects. See NSW Health for how public health orders affect your individual circumstances.
● Exercise is permitted for visitors who reside within Cumberland LGA or 5km of the cemetery.
● Masks must be worn at all times and social distancing must be observed.
● Burial services continue to be offered seven days per week.

See rookwoodcemetery.com.au/important-community-notice for the latest information.

Can you help me find someone in Rookwood’s Jewish section?

Visit rookwoodcemetery.com.au/deceased-search-engine and enter the first and last name to be taken to a map which will give you GPS coordinates. Please be aware that due to Rookwood’s size and age, our location data is regularly updated. We welcome any feedback that may help us improve our mapping data for public use. Email info@rookwoodcemetery.com.au.

Our main office is currently closed for face-to-face general enquiries, with client services representatives available via phone (02) 8575 8100 on weekdays (7.30am-4pm), Saturdays (9am-1pm), and Sundays (9am-3pm).

I’m looking to buy a plot in the Jewish section? Where do I start?

At present, we can only do phone and email consultations.

  1. Call (02) 8575 8100 and let our client services staff know you are looking to purchase in Rookwood’s Jewish Cemetery.
  2. You will be shown photos of the plot(s) on a map, with GPS location. Rookwood only sells the next plot in line to confirm that no allotments are missed, and that when families are looking to buy several plots together, they can do so.
  3. If you decide to purchase a burial licence – subject to Chevra Kadisha approval – paperwork will be drawn up, terms and conditions explained, and payment must be made within two working days. Staff are available to answer your questions at every step of the process.

To ensure the Jewish community are receiving high quality service, Rookwood General Cemetery works closely with many community stakeholders, including the Chevra Kadisha.

Rookwood has a dedicated Jewish site manager, a team with a deep understanding of Jewish funeral practices, including burials, memorials and administration, and the Beit Tephilla (prayer house) is maintained as an alternative to graveside services.
