Outgoing president gets life membership

HARRY Stein was named a life member of the Maccabi Lawn Bowls Guild when he stepped down as president last month.
The honour came as quite a surprise to the 70-year-old. “I had no idea I was going to be made a life member and I was completely overwhelmed,” he said.
“I got very emotional about it because I have always been very active and I’ve always been there to help out, but I just did it to be a good member, not for any recognition.”
Stein was president for three different terms for a total of 10 years. He still bowls three times a week and has no plans to retire. “I still love bowling, and I think I’ll do it until I drop if my health allows me to.”
In 2009, Stein was awarded the Bernie Garden Recognition Award, which marked his contribution to the club over the past two decades.
New president Louis Platus said the decision to make Stein a life member was easy.
“He has given such a long service to the bowls club and the club has strived over the years he has been in charge,” Platus said, adding that he is excited to take over the club in such a great shape.
“When I’ve been involved in Maccabi, I have always found that
having the best sportsmen is important but it’s also about social activities.
“I’ve met my friends from the squash club and the cricket club, and I think it will be great to have more social events including a bridge night, sportsman dinner and theatre night.”
Platus is joined on the committee by Rod Silber, Dafna Orbach, Peter Goldman, Terence Joffe, Shmuel Abrahams, Bernie Garden, Barrie Brickman, Sol Caganoff, Sam Ginges, Sid Glick, Philip Joel, John Wineberg and Stein on the committee.
