Tuning in to Kids is a group course that helps parents and carers build skills in emotionally intelligent parenting, aimed at parents of children aged two to 10 years old.

Developed by the University of Melbourne, the program helps parents strengthen their connection with their child through recognising and responding to “big feelings”, helping children learn how to regulate and express their feelings and behaviours.

“Jewish Care has been running the Tuning in to Kids program since 2020 after carefully adapting it to ensure its relevance for Jewish families,” said Cassandra Barrett, Jewish Care’s manager of community education and participation

“We are delighted to welcome a mix of parents and carers reflecting the diversity of our community,” she added.

“As well as learning new skills and strategies, the program offers an opportunity to meet with other parents for supportive discussions about the ups and downs of parenting.”

Participants frequently report that the opportunity to be heard without judgement in a safe, welcoming space, is incredibly powerful.

One past participant said, “This program has transformed how I engage with my children. Our household feels much calmer lately. In situations where in the past I would have yelled or dismissed my child, I am now able to slow down and notice what’s happening for them.”

One father said, “I feel a lot closer to my kids; they even tell me they appreciate me noticing and responding to their emotions.

“I knew I was a good dad, but this program helped me to be a great one.”

The first series of Tuning in to Kids this year will run on Tuesday evenings, beginning February 25.
