MACCABI Squash Club’s division 3 junior side pulled off a stunning win in its decider against Lilydale Club last week to clinch the pennant.
Byron Robertson got the side off to the perfect start with a resounding 3-1 win in his rubber. Cale Hirshman fought hard but was unable to hold off his opponent, going down 3-1 and sending the final into a decisive doubles rubber.
Robertson and Elliot Levine took the court with the pennant in the balance and blitzed their Lilydale opponents 3-1 to wrap up the match, sparking celebrations.
The Maccabi side dominated the decider, winning two of a possible three rubbers and seven of 11 games Coach Jodie Cashmore was delighted with the win, as was the small but vocal group of supporters who turned out to support the trio.
In senior squash news, it was a mixed bag for Maccabi during
the week, with four of nine sides managing a win.
Maccabi’s State League 3 and A-grade sides were outclassed, while the B-grade side edged Brighton in a nail-biter.
