Phillips slams Albanese government
With a federal election coming up, Phillips said Australians should be encouraged by the American vote.
Esteemed British journalist and political commentator Melanie Phillips has accused the Albanese government of adding to the justification of antisemitic incidents by not calling out the lies that are being parroted about Israel.
Speaking to The AJN ahead of her trip to Australia for Sydney-based Australian Friends of Magen David Adom, Phillips said if the Australian government would simply set the record straight, it would make it difficult for people “who are behaving on the backs of these lies to continue behaving in that way”.
“In Australia you’ve got a government that is not only not calling it out, but is adding to the justification for all of this,” she said.
But with a federal election coming up, Phillips said Australians should be encouraged by the American vote.
“What left-wing governments forget is the people,” she said.
“They see the Muslim camp, which is increasing in numbers, they see Jews who are like nothing in terms of numbers, so there’s not a contest. But that’s not the electoral calculation they need to make. Their electoral calculation needs to be made on the basis of the millions of people who are neither Muslim nor Jew.
“Democratic politicians need to win the popular vote, they need to win the public, which is millions of non-aligned people.
“The forces that brought Trump to power twice are the forces that said we are no longer prepared to have a consensus rammed down our throats that wishes to deprive us of our traditional culture within our own nation and within our own borders.”
Phillips has been living in Jerusalem and has been watching from afar as the Western “elite” has “swallowed a narrative based entirely on falsehoods and demonisation”.
“They have lost the moral intellectual plot,” she said, adding that it is a relief to be living in Israel.
“A new chapter of Jewish history is being made and I am at the centre of where it is being made,” Phillips said.
“A feeling that is so astonishing among young people – both those who are fighting and those who are not fighting – is a sense that what’s being fought for is not just the safety of the nation and the existence of the State of Israel, but that we collectively are honouring and carrying on the fight that’s gone on against us for generations.
“Uniquely, the Jews of Israel firmly understand they have a future because they are anchored in the past.”
