Pollies’ Chanukah greetings
Malcolm Turnbull
Prime Minister
FOR centuries the lighting of the menorah has symbolised the triumph of light over darkness.
The repetition of this simple expression of confidence in the future strengthens the Jewish faithful as it strengthens us all.
We all need the Chanukah message of hope and peace. It reminds us that good people overcome evil and that religious freedom is worth protecting.
We recommit this Chanukah to an Australia where people of different beliefs can be part of our nationaI tradition and part of a united and tolerant nation.
I wish you your family and friends a happy Chanukah.
Bill Shorten
Leader of the Opposition
I AM very happy to have the opportunity to once again wish all my friends of the Australian Jewish community a happy Chanukah.
This year I am especially fortunate to be able to enjoy Chanukah in Israel and am looking forward to some fresh sufganiyot!
This is always a special time of year where we can give thanks for living in our wonderfully diverse country and re-dedicate ourselves to the task of keeping it that way.
The central theme of Chanukah reminds us that a commitment to freedom requires all of us to engage in the effort to defend and support the struggle against tyranny and evil around the world, which sadly remains a serious challenge.
In gathering our families around us we can give thanks for the blessings of family life and take time to show the love to each other we sometimes get too busy to demonstrate.
I am very much looking forward to visiting Israel this year during the Festival of Lights.
Chanukah Sameach!
