The Jewish Community Council of Victoria (JCCV) welcomed City of Port Phillip mayor Heather Cunsolo to its Jewish Immersion Program.

The Jewish Immersion Program is an initiative of the JCCV that educates service providers to better understand the Victorian Jewish community. The program aims to explain the diversity of the Melbourne Jewish community: from religious practice to social issues. It also identifies community challenges, such as antisemitism, and provides participants with resources, including a comprehensive overview of the Jewish calendar.

Cunsolo attended the most recent program run for the City of Port Phillip, together with a group of council staff.

“It was enlightening to learn more specifically about our wonderful Jewish community in the City of Port Phillip,” Cunsolo said. “In only a few hours I felt better informed and inspired to continue enhancing our policies and services to reflect our diverse community.”

Joshua Goodman, JCCV project officer and the coordinator of the Jewish Immersion Program, thanked the mayor for attending.

“The JCCV’s Jewish Immersion Program is going from strength-to-strength. We are educating and engaging with a broad range of service providers,” Goodman said.

“This program will ultimately lead to better service provision for Jewish people who access council services, such as family, aged care and disability services, and recreational facilities.”

Up-skilling key members of the workforce delivering care and support services in south-east Melbourne on Jewish life and practices was prioritised by Judy Fetter, JCCV CEO, as knowledge gaps were identified.

“The level of engagement and flow on benefits for the participant and Jewish recipient of services is significant. Greater understanding builds mutual trust, respect, and more positive outcomes,” Fetter said.

The program included a visit to St Kilda Hebrew Congregation, which is located in the City of Port Phillip, and a presentation was given by Rabbi Yaakov Glasman.

“The Jewish Immersion Program with City of Port Phillip was an incredible opportunity to provide a window into Judaism and showcase the Jewish community to a diverse group of people representing the City of Port Phillip,” Rabbi Glasman said.
