SWIMMING

Levy medals in his 20th nationals

Paralympian Matt Levy has just completed his 20th Australian Para Swimming Championships, a remarkable achievement.

Swimming in Adelaide from April 9-12, the 35-year-old Sydneysider won a silver medal in the men’s 100 breaststroke final with a time of 1:22.67, and also a bronze when clocking 1:01.74 in the 100 freestyle final.

Commenting on his longevity at the nationals since debuting at the 2002 championships in Hobart as a teenager, Levy told Swimming Australia, his “goals are the same – to continue to improve – but I think it’s the fun factor that’s probably the biggest thing for me. I continue to enjoy it [competing]”.

FOOTBALL

Sapsford named in Sydney’s ACL squad

Former Hakoah FC striker Zac Sapsford, 19, is one of 10 young Sydney FC Academy players named last week in the Sky Blues’ 34-man extended squad for their upcoming 6-game Asian Champions League (ACL) campaign.

Sydney FC’s head coach Steve Corica said, “We will narrow the squad to 26 before we leave for Vietnam, but we are looking at some younger boys, and maybe a few will get the opportunity to travel with the squad”.

Sydney’s first match is on April 17 versus Korean club Jeonbuk Hyundai in Ho Chi Minh City.

Sapsford is enjoying his first season in the NSW NPL1 men’s competition. He has scored 2 goals and his team is currently ladder leaders after 6 rounds.

FUTSAL

Futsalroos bow out

Hakoah Futsal Club players Robbie Ezekiel and Jono Barzel both earned their first playing minutes for the Futsalroos at the Asian Football Federation’s Futsal Championship which was held in Vietnam earlier this month.

Both came off the bench in Australia’s 7-4 win over Timor Leste – and also got minutes in Australia’s losses to Myanmar and Vietnam, which saw them bow out in the group stage.

WAKEBOARDING

Axford aces it

Jewish teen Jackson Axford put his hard work at training to good use in early April by excelling at the 2022 Boardstock at Bli Bli tournament in the Sunshine Coast – Australia’s longest running professional wakeboard event.

Axford, from the Gold Coast, competed in the 20-strong Pro Men’s division, winning his heat and semi-final, finishing overall runner-up.

He nailed his flips on the first ramp, and then a complex multi-turn manoeuvre on the second.
