A protest organised by community group J-United drew approximately 100 demonstrators in Melbourne on Saturday, at what was meant to be the site of a Greens Party community barbecue.

The planned event at Princes Gardens in Prahran which was to feature party leader Adam Bandt and Macnamara candidate Sonya Semmens, did not proceed.

A Greens spokesman has been quoted in the media as saying it was cancelled to do the extreme weather.

But J-United spokesperson Simonne Whine suggested the party “got wind of our planned protest and that’s why they cancelled the barbecue.”

The demonstration aimed to voice concerns about what protesters described as the Greens’ stance on various issues affecting the Jewish community.

” This is not a political party, it is an extremist movement that has no place in Australian democracy. If the Greens gain power in a hung parliament, their reckless ideology will only grow” Whine said.

“We urge all Jewish Australians to stand with us in sending a clear message to the Greens: We will not tolerate hate, extremism, or the normalisation of antisemitism in our democracy. Australia cannot afford this

Whine highlighted specific incidents involving Greens representatives.

“Greens MP Jenny Leong [has] invoked Nazi-era antisemitic tropes, while Senator Mehreen Faruqi posed next to a sign calling for Israel’s destruction. And when a synagogue in Melbourne was firebombed in a terrorist attack, what did we hear from the Greens? Conspiracy theories from their own staffers, dismissing it as a “Zionist false flag”, she said.

Whine says J-United plans to continue their campaign to raise awareness about these concerns within the Jewish community.

The Greens have contacted by the AJN for comment but have not yet responded.

Meanwhile, a comedian used by the Victorian Greens at a campaign launch reportedly has a history of making controversial statements about Israel and Macnamara MP Josh Burns, who is Jewish.

Rose Callaghan was at the launch of the Greens campaign to topple Mr Burns last week.

On social media she has deserved Hamas as “a resistance group”, and suggested Israel should be called a terrorist group.

She also responded to a social media post from Mr Burns inviting people to ask him questions with “Why do you support genocide?”

The comedian has accused Burns of suppoprting genocide, criticised him for visiting Israel twi months after the cutover 7 atrocities and refers to Zionists as “Zios”.
