The Australian Jewish community is mourning the loss of Rabbi Raymond Apple, who passed away on Friday night in Jerusalem.

Rabbi Apple was emeritus rabbi of The Great Synagogue , a respected scholar and a prominent figure of The Australian Rabbinate.

The Rabbinical Council of NSW (RCNSW) said in a statement after Shabbat, “The RCNSW is very sad to hear news of the passing of our past President, Rabbi Raymond Apple zt”l.

“Rabbi Apple was a towering figure in the New South Wales and Australian rabbinate. He served for many years as our President and as Registrar and Dayan of the Sydney Beth Din. He was one of the leading Rabbinic voices in the Australian public sphere for the last quarter of the twentieth century. He was a true friend and mentor to many rabbis, and they often turned to him for his wisdom, advice and guidance.

“He stood for authentic Jewish values, Halacha and tradition. His love for Israel was always clear and was crowned by his Aliyah to Jerusalem after retirement.

“He will be remembered with respect and affection. We send our condolences to his family. Yehi zichro baruch.”

Rabbi Apple leaves behind Marian, his wife of 63 years, children Shmuel and Ateret, Riva and Davoru, Adina and Rafi, and Benseon and Ruth.

More to come.
