The Rabbinical Council of Victoria (RCV) undertook a training program on the key requirements of operating a child safe organisation last week.

Led by Child Wise, the focus of the training was on the legal and regulatory obligations in Victoria and safeguarding through culture, leadership and governance.

Child Wise is an organisation that aims to transform systems and institutions through coaching, consulting and accreditation to keep children and young people safe from abuse and harm.

The RCV training session focused on governance-related risks and exposure, navigating the complex child safety landscape, addressing stakeholder needs, and the barriers and challenges involved in meeting and maintaining high standards of child safety.

The training program was delivered by senior adviser at Child Wise Mandy Britt-Crowhurst, and hosted by RCV co-vice president Rabbi Moshe Kahn.

Rabbi Kahn said, “Protecting children is our sacred obligation, making sure children in our care are physically, emotionally and spiritually nurtured and protected.” He added that the RCV puts child protection at the “forefront, ensuring all its members are informed and up to date with child safe standards”.

Attendees had the chance to share their methods and processes in creating child safe environments and implementing the 11 standards Child Wise recommends into their policies and procedures.

RCV co-vice president Rabbi Yaakov Glasman told The AJN that the “critical point” Britt-Crowhurst reportedly emphasised was that “the single most important aspect within an organisation is not its policies and procedures but the organisational culture that underpins them and ongoing training and professional development is a highly effective way to keep child protection front and centre of our minds”.

Britt-Crowhurst, said that Child Wise recommends “all organisations” undertake regular training as part of their child safeguarding strategy. “With changes to the Victorian Child Safe standards being introduced this year, understanding the new obligations and requirements is even more critical.”
