PIONEERING and innovative were among the words used by Mount Scopus Memorial College principal Rabbi James Kennard to describe the school’s new kitchen garden.

Officially opened last week, the garden, which adjoins a five-station kosher kitchen, enables students to plant and till produce before cooking it.

Planned by a group of year 6 mathematics students last year, the garden is designed in the shape of a Magen David, with fresh, organic vegetables and herbs growing in sections and a chicken coop off to the side.

Years 4 and 5 students spend fortnightly lessons in the garden with a qualified horticulturalist, before cooking in the kitchen classroom with kitchen teacher Delia Baron. “The kids are learning so much; culturally, through science, maths, English. It’s coming into every lesson,” Baron said.

Attendees at the opening watched a year 4 class prepare afternoon tea for the guests using produce from the garden.
