Refocus club connects seniors in friendship
This year, Refocus is celebrating turning 13, its "bar mitzvah year", with a Gala Night of Magical Music.
Loneliness is a common challenge for many people, especially as they get older. The Refocus Club Melbourne Inc seeks to change that by creating a vibrant Jewish friendship group for people in their 60s and over.
It was established in 2012 by a group of friends including Jack Aghion, Aron Merar and Claire Neville, who recognised a need for social and friendship opportunities. Today it has over 110 members in Melbourne and continues to grow.
“The importance of an organisation like Refocus and its contribution to society, and what it offers to our community cannot be emphasised enough,” Faye Haskin Dubrowin told The AJN. “It breaks down issues of loneliness, isolation and offers lots of activity choices, interests and most importantly – friendships.”
Refocus activities include monthly Meet and Greet dinners for potential applicants to meet members; Sunday brunches; dances; theatre; annual gala musical nights; coffee, chat and games nights; guest speakers; discussion forums; ladies’ lunches; Chanukah parties; Sunday movie afternoons; Cup Eve events and much more – all with the aim of having fun as people age.
“New ideas are always welcome, and members can facilitate an event/activity of interest – or just come along,” Haskin Dubrowin said.
