Rubenstein wins 40-and-under title

A cold, windy day greeted a good turnout of 35 players for the second Maccabi NSW Golf 40-and-under Championships, held at St Michaels Golf Course on Sunday, May 28.

The conditions and the course proved tough, making good scoring a challenge for many in the field.

Notwithstanding the conditions, Jason Rubenstein completed a personal double by winning the strokeplay tournament, to add to his victory in the NSW Maccabi Championships in November.

Rubenstein is the first player to win both trophies.

He told The AJN, “It was a great event, and to see so many U40 players participating was very encouraging.

“David Felthun and James Israel put on a great day, and to win both the NSW Maccabi Championships, and then this tournament, was an honour.”

Rubenstein – who represented Australia in golf at the 2022 Maccabiah Games – has enjoyed consistently good form on the golf course over the last 18 months.

And it comes after several years of recovering from injuries, and spinal surgery, making it even more fulfilling.

The Stableford winner was Kevin Lewinsky.

Among the rare birdies scored was one by Ryan Lorge, who holed out from about 30 metres, much to the delight of his playing partners.

Maccabi NSW Golf president David Felthun said the tournament achieved exactly what it set out to do.

“It brought together the younger generation of Jewish golfers, and engaged more of them in Maccabi golf,” he said.

The next major Jewish golf tournament will be the 2023 NSW Maccabi Championships, to be held at Monash Country Club in Sydney’s Northern Beaches, on November 9.
