Sasson dedicates title to Israel

Having been an Australian Open wheelchair quad singles finalist in January, 44-year-old Israeli player Guy Sasson (pictured) continued his rapid rise in Paris last weekend, when he won his debut grand slam title, the French Open.
Beating Aussie Heath Davidson 6-0, 6-2 first-up, Sasson cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 semi-final win over the top seed, Dutchman Niels Vink.
That set up a spicy final against Sam Schroder – the Dutchman who’d beaten him in the final at Melbourne Park and again on hardcourt at the Japan Open, but never on clay.
In an epic decider, Sasson won the first set 6-2, lost the second set 3-6 and saved several match points before forcing a deciding set super tiebreaker, which he won 10-7.
During the presentation, Sasson said to win his first major in such thrilling fashion “cannot be any sweeter”.
“This one belongs to my country. We just got an amazing message that four of the hostages came back alive today and we are so happy, so I dedicate this trophy to them.”
Sasson will now prepare for his debut Wimbledon and Paralympics, campaigns.
