Applications are open for the 2027 Gandel Holocaust Studies Scholarship Program for Australian Educators, a fully funded graduate scholarship program for secondary school teachers.

The program is open to active and qualified secondary school teachers of any subject or discipline who are teaching, or intend to teach, the Holocaust. Applications from those involved in teacher training may also be considered, provided Holocaust education is part of their curriculum.

The program runs in two stages. Stage one will be held in Melbourne from January 11-19, 2027. Stage two will take place at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, Israel, during term two school holidays in June/July 2027, subject to travel advice from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Since its establishment in 2009, the program has awarded scholarships to 500 teachers from secondary schools across all sectors in Australia. Using an age-appropriate and interdisciplinary approach, the Gandel Holocaust Studies Program trains expert teachers across Australia to form an active network of educators committed to teaching the Holocaust and its universal implications.

Describing the program’s impact on her teaching and personal development, 2026 scholarship recipient Jess O’Loghlen said she walked away with a community of academics, educators, friends and family, united by a commitment to making teaching what it should be: lifelong learning and embracing stories and humanity.
