ARGENTINA’S Diego Schwartzman fought off South African Lloyd Harris to advance further into the Australian Open on Tuesday.

The Buenos Aires-based 14th seed saw off Harris in his first-round encounter, winning 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.

After the match, Schwartzman told The AJN he didn’t have “the best start” today but “I tried to improve many things in the second and third [set]”, and later in the match Harris “started to make many mistakes on the baseline”.

In other tennis news, Italy’s Camila Giorgi used her trademark strong, level groundstrokes to triumph over German Antonia Lottner in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.

Meanwhile, American Madison Brengle made an exit from the Open after a tough clash with Caroline Garcia, losing 7-6, 2-6, 2-6 to her French opponent.

In an AJN interview, a self-effacing Brengle compared her performance to Garcia’s: “In the first set I was able to hold my own a little better on my serve and then my serve started to break down and she served very well, so I feel that when I started missing too many first serves and doing double faults in the second and third, I gave her an opportunity to step up on the return, and she continued to serve really well. Her serve didn’t break down and mine did.”
