Year 11 Mount Scopus Memorial College student Kailey Silver is one of the winners at this year’s Student Film Festival hosted by Independent Schools Victoria for her confronting short film, Mask Off.

Mask Off features a young girl who hides her true self by wearing a mask whenever she is with her family and friends, which Silver said symbolises “the facade that teens wear around their parents”.

Inspired by conversations with her peers, Silver said she found that “teenagers did not always feel as if their parental figures made an effort to know about their authentic feelings, and as a result teens find themselves pretending to be content and happy, even in the hardest times”.

The VCE student created the moving short film as part of a media studies class, with the help of friends who stepped in as actors.

Festival judge Christine Evely, the head of education at Australian Centre for Moving Image (ACMI), praised Mask Off, which was one of 70 student entries, for its “outstanding and sensitive treatment of a very important topic”.

Hearing the news, Silver said, “I was over the moon. To know that my intended message had reached parents who needed to hear it was incredibly rewarding.”

Silver hopes to pursue a career in musical theatre after completing VCE. She said striving for a career in the arts will be “a decision that I know my little self would be very proud of, and I owe it to her to give it a shot!”

Congratulations Kailey!
