"I have entered politics because I believe I can be a great voice for our community, advocating for small businesses, more green spaces for our families and local infrastructure."

Coming from a multicultural background allows Kingsford Smith Liberal candidate Grace Tan (pictured) to understand the additional challenges that diverse communities can face, she told The AJN this week.

The real estate agent said she has gotten to know large sections of the local community – including members of the Jewish community – and their needs, concerns and aspirations.

“Kingsford Smith’s Jewish community shares many of the same concerns and aspirations – from wanting to improve our traffic congestion, so people spend less time stuck on the roads, and ensuring our kids have good local job opportunities – to a few unique ones, such as the need for appropriate community security.

“I have entered politics because I believe I can be a great voice for our community, advocating for small businesses, more green spaces for our families and local infrastructure,” she said.

With Kingsford Smith being a multicultural electorate, she said, “Together we are stronger and can overcome almost anything.”

Tan opposes the BDS movement and supports ongoing trade and diplomatic ties with Israel.

“While we may not agree on everything, it is important that we keep the conversation open, with both nations benefiting from our bilateral relationship,” she said.

“I hope to one day be able to visit the State of Israel.”

Tan said she was inspired to run for office after volunteering at the Sydney’s Children’s Hospital and Starlight Children’s Foundation.

“I found that I wanted to make a wider contribution to help people,” she said.

“By getting involved in politics I could help the whole community.

“If elected, I will be able to represent our community in the Morrison government, whose strong economy management ensures that we can continue to invest in local infrastructure and essential services, as well as easing the cost of living pressures on hardworking Australians.”

Prepoll opens on Monday, May 9.
