Shapovalov crashes out
Israeli-born Denis Shapovalov has bundled out of the first round of the Australian Open, losing in four sets 3-6, 7-6, 1-6, 6-7.
ON-court nerves got the better of Canada’s Denis Shapovalov on the first day of the Australian Open, as he was bundled out in four sets
3-6, 7-6, 1-6, 6-7, going down to Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics.
Speaking to media afterwards, the deflated Canadian said he was “really nervous” and “played really tightly”.
The Israeli-born player, who is ranked 13th in the world, credited Fucsovics with “playing an excellent match – super solid”.
To make matters worse, Shapovalov was coded and fined for a racket incident.
“I threw my racket but didn’t break it … so what?” said Shapovalov, adding he needed to do it to “let off steam and relax”.
Asked about air quality at the tournament, Shapovalov complained he wasn’t briefed adequately about it while playing in the Auckland Open before the Australian Open.
