The MCG is looking at its security protocols after antisemitic slogans were electronically projected onto the wall.
It happened during the State of Origin match on June 26, when slogans such as “Israel is an apartheid regime that has been ethnically cleransing Palestine for 76+ years” could be seen on the wall near Gate 2.
The slogans were featured in a video posted t social media sites by a group called Free Palestine Melbourne.
Zeddy Lawrence, Executive Director of Zionism Victoria, wrote to MCG Chairman Steve Bracks on behalf of the community to ask how and why the offensive statements were shown and wahat is being done to make sure it doesn’t happen agains.
He said ZV had been contacted by a number of members of the Jewish community who were deeply disturbed by the images.
“The stadium should not be used as a canvas for corrupting the truth and inciting hate. Targeting the spiritual home of Australian sport, the anti-Israel activists have shown yet again that they’ll seize any opportunity to spread disinformation by distorting history and disseminating highly offensive anti-Zionist and antisemitic slurs,” he said.
The MCG said the images were projected into a wall by a group of individuals unaffiliated with the MCC.
Four people werer at Yarra Park and used a projector to display the images onto the side of the stadium near Gate 2B.
Police intervened and moved them away.
The MCG spokesperson said “We are now working closely with police and our security team to ensure that these incidents do not reoccur and are reviewing our security protocols. We are committed to providing a safe and respectful environment for all our visitors and regret any distress this incident may have caused.”
