ZOOMING down an asphalt track at 200 km/h in a custom-built BMW racing car is not the way most people spend their free time, but for David Levy it’s a hobby, a livelihood and a fruitful career.

Last weekend, the ex-Yavneh College student achieved the highlight of his racing life, finishing first in a Confederate Australia Motor Sports race meet at Sandown raceway.

Levy was first in both the qualifying and final of the all-BMW race, and also came in 13th from 37 cars in the open category, good enough to finish top of the classifications.

The victory is sweetened by the fact that Levy won in a car built and customised at David Levy Motorsports’ workshop, Levy’s business where his team develops elite BMW racers.

Levy spoke to The AJN after his triumph about his two overlapping passions of building and racing BMWs.

“The result has been a long time coming,” Levy said.

“But as much as I’m so happy about the win, I’m also really passionate about presenting a beautiful car at these events.”

Levy was quick to praise his crew for all their hard work.

“Every year we tune up the car as best we can, trying to improve that little bit,” he said.

“The cars keep getting faster, so a lot of effort before the race goes into that last little bit extra on the track.”

While a full-time career in motor sport racing is tempting, Levy’s work and a busy family demands attention. “Between driving and my busi- ness, the business comes first at the moment,” he said. “I’d like to practise more but I’ve got two girls under three, so for now, the driving’s a weekend hobby.”

Despite the distractions, if Levy’s form continues into the remaining four meets, it puts him in the driver’s seat for a career-high top three overall placing.
