WEIGHTLIFTING

Yates’ comeback goes well in Melbourne

IT was her first major tournament since winning gold for Australia at the 2019 World Masters Weightlifting Championships, and while Leora Yates didn’t win it in the end, she broke a Victorian masters women’s record in the snatch, clean and jerk at last week’s Controlled Chaos Weightlifting Classic in Coburg North.

Representing Melbourne West Barbell Club, she competed in the women’s 45 years/over 87kg body weight division.

“It was great to get back on the platform again, have a great comp, and break some more records, as it has been a hard couple of years, with COVID restrictions, training, as well as opening my gym in North Caulfield,” Yates said.

Her next big tournament will be the Victorian Masters Weightlifting Championships in June.

Hemed meets Jewish fans after Wanderers’ draw with Adelaide

About 80 Jewish football fans travelled by bus to CommBank Stadium last Sunday, thanks to JNF NSW, to watch Israeli striker Tomer Hemed play for the Western Sydney Wanderers in their 0-0 draw with Adelaide.

Hemed played in the second half, and made one on-target shot at goal.

JNF Australia shaliach Yigal Nisell said Hemed has been involved with JNF on many different occasions, and has many fans in the Jewish community, of all ages.

“There were many kids from the northern and eastern suburbs who came to this match to watch their hero playing,” Nisell said.

“Hemed did not score a goal on the night, but after the game, he signed autographs and took photos with these young fans – now that’s what you call a real mensch!”

Meanwhile, Jordi Swibel scored a hat-trick for the Wanderers last weekend in the Men’s State League One, in their 7-1 win over Hills United, which will boost his chance of earning more minutes in the A-League this season.
