"I didn't have to be Jewish but it made my job easier because I understood the people and their community," Green said.

There were around 60 local community members, plus one cavoodle named Sadie, at the recent Thursday Lunch Club at StĀ Kilda Shule.

The guest speaker was Sarah Green, the first female Jewish police officer who graduated from the Victorian Police Academy 20 years ago.

Now a sergeant with Victoria Police, Sarah Green confessed, “I joined without knowing anything about it.

“My [school] friends got in so I figured if they could, I could.

“I didn’t know what to expect when I started, I just knew I wanted to help the community.”

Her first placement after graduation was in Transit, which meant spending a lot of time on trains.

From there she was posted to the St Kilda Police Station where she took on the Jewish liaison role.

“I didn’t have to be Jewish but it made my job easier because I understood the people and their community,” Green said.

Having said that, she reiterated that she never involved herself when family or close friends were involved in an issue.

Green said she has seen dramatic changes in the force over the past 20 years. She is now a team leader, peer support officer and mentor in South Melbourne.

As a non-practising Jew she doesn’t advertise her faith.

Rabbi Glasman said, “St Kilda Shule loves hosting a diverse range of interesting speakers for these events.

“Sergeant Green certainly did an outstanding job engaging the audience and giving us a window into her important and fascinating work.”
